Hornád Open: More Than a Competition
Passionate about fly fishing, a group of friends embraced the idea of organizing a fly fishing competition on the Hornád River. The main goal is to support the reinstatement of a catch-and-release section within the trout waters. With increased attention and well-organized fishery management, the vision is not only to restore the catch-and-release area, but also to rebuild a healthy population of native fish species.
Today, many challenges threaten the balance of the river’s ecosystem. Growing damage caused by invasive cormorants, rising water temperatures, pollution, and poaching all negatively impact the stability and sustainability of the fish population.
The first important step forward was taken in 2025 with the adoption of the conservation program “Pstruhy, poďte domov.” Through the organization of the Hornád Open competition, greater public awareness can be generated, while attracting partners and sponsors to support the initiative. At the same time, the event aims to boost fly fishing activity, leading to increased sales of fishing licenses and providing local organizations with a larger budget to continue conservation and management efforts.
